There’s a special beauty and tranquility to candles, but a lighted candle is also an open flame, and a potential fire hazard if not carefully monitored.
When lighting a candle, always follow these basic rules.
1) Never leave a burning candle unattended – and do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
2) Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.
3) Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Before lighting a candle…
- Trim the wick! You can use a wick trimmer or any small scissors. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping or flaring.
- Keep the wax pool clear of trimmings, matches, or debris.
- If the candle is not already in a container, place the candle in an appropriate candle holder (size should keep the candle standing firm with enough space to contain any dripping wax).
- Place candle on heat-resistant surface, and position candle away from curtains and other fabrics and furniture (TVs are not fire-resistant objects so be sure to keep clear).
- Keep candle away from clothes and hair! Do not place candle where you may need to reach over it while it is burning for any reason.
- Keep candle out of reach of children and pets.
While the candle is lit...
- Do not leave the candle unattended. Do not burn a candle for longer than 4 hours at a time, leaving up to 2 hours cooling time before lighting again.
- Avoid drafts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.
- Do not touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquefied.
- Keep candles apart. Leave at least four inches (10cm) between two burning candles.
- Never go to sleep with a candle still burning. And never leave a burning candle or oil burner going in a child’s bedroom.
Before putting out the candle...
- Use a snuffer or a spoon to put the candle out. It’s safer than blowing them, and also preserves the fragrance.
- Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
- Don’t touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
